The link between SD and MM

In SAP the sales and distribution (SD) module is highly connected with the Materials Management module (MM). To understand better lets briefly explore the sales order life cycle.

The sales order life cycle will start when you receive an order from the customer. The sales order is further processed by verifying the availability of the ordered goods, which is implemented in MM module.

If the stock availability check specifies that the required stock is not available, then the system will transfer the requirement to MM, again results in SD MM integration. The goods can be made avail with the following options:

1)      Organize the outbound delivery via another warehouse.

2)      Order the outbound delivery via external suppliers (Third party vendor).

3)      Through make-to- order production. Or

4)      Can be guaranteed by replenishment.

All these procurement processes are controlled and organized by the MM module, which again results in the SD MM integration.

While you create inbound/outbound delivery with reference to a sales order, the shipping point determination takes place with the help of the loading group, plant data, shipping conditions etc. these data’s will taken from the material master record which comes under the control of MM.

The link between SD and PP

Mainly the integration of SD and PP occurs in Make-To-Order Production scenario, where customer-dependent requirements are transferred directly from SD to PP.
